Crixa Cakes

So in celebration of moving on to the third and hopefully last rotation of my graduate career, I went and bought some cake (maybe it was an excuse to buy cake, now that I think about it). I bought two slices of lemon cream cake from  Crixa Cakes , located on Adeline a little north of Berkeley Bowl. Of note, 17 of the 18 customers lounging about were women. I suppose it was 4 pm. Maybe the clientele base changes a bit after 5 pm. Who doesn’t like tea and cake??! So the cake was pretty tasty- I think I shall buy more every now and again.

No Internet

oh_noes.jpgJules and I are trying to take advantage of the internet without a phone line (dry-loop) service that ATT is being forced to offer now. Here are the steps so far:

January 16: Jules calls and switches the plan. They say the current phone/dsl service will be shut off on the 24th. Jules sets up an appointment for the 25th, Friday, for a technician to come by and activate the dry-loop service. Jules and Mike rearrange lives around appointment time.

January 23: Random technician calls Jules and essentially says he’s there to shut off the service. Jules happens to be at home by coincidence and man comes in and does something.

January 24: Internet goes away.

January 25: ATT is a no show. Jules calls and they said there was no appointment for and that the service should be on but there are apparently some phone lines down but they should be up by 4:30pm.

January 26: Mike calls ATT, talks to half a dozen people before he’s told that the tech department looks pretty backed up but they’ll call me (as in the cell phone number that I gave them) within 24 hrs.

January 26: While running errands Jules gets an automated call that says everything is just fine.

January 26: Get back from errands. No internet. Mike calls again, whines for a while. They attempt to transfer me to tech, but they’re closed… it’s 5:50pm.

January 27: Mike calls tech at 9am. They say automated test was a waste of time. We make an appointment for a tech to come out between 4:00-8:00pm on January 28. I am told that I don’t have to be there by 4:00pm. I can delay the appointment when the tech calls to when I’m home.

To be continued…

Update: ATT contractor came, internet restored, peace on earth.

Snowboarding

So this past weekend, Mike, Kim, Eddie + cousins, and I went to Boreal to go snowboarding. The weather was nice, and I think that this was the best attempt yet for me. Woo woo! Cookie for me! For better snowboarders, Boreal would be boring (short, easier runs), but this was just perfect for me.

The Bright Side

mom-and-i.jpg

I told my mom over the weekend that starting very soon I won’t be working in the city anymore. I’m going to triple my commute time and start working in the South Bay. So she asked if I knew the Monty Python song “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.” I said it seemed familiar. Yesterday I went out and saw her again. This time she had the Monty Python album for me.

She just had her 60th birthday last week on Monday. It’s not something I think about very often, how old my mom is. But when I do it’s very strange for me. Sixty seems so old in my head but when I look at her I see a peppy little lady. She made me a sandwich when I was home. I miss her sandwiches.

Born to be Wild

My mom was in a mothers’ group when I was young. They would get together and let the kids run wild. Although I don’t wear sandals on my bike these days, I do still have broken peddles.

Today I was home teaching my mom how to scan and email photos. I flipped through a few books of photos that I haven’t seen in years. Made me want to scan a bunch of post them all over the place. Maybe one day I’ll go home and swipe the books. >_>

New Years Resolutions for Jules

Now that I am food comatose, I shall work up some new year resolutions for myself.

1. I tend to lose my keys around the apt because I misplace them and forget where they are. I’m going to try to be better about putting my keys on the key hook as soon as I get home.

2. Play more violin! Self explanatory :P

3. I’m sometimes laggy in responding to friends, and I’d like to do a better job responding to them, by phone, email or letter. I’d also like to write more letters to people this year. I think that it’s nice to receive letters every now and then- it takes more effort than email.

4. Try to run/walk once a week, and do more push-uppy sit-uppy lunge-uppy things at home in between the run/walks.

And that is all I can think of for now ^_^ Happy New Years!!
